On November 27 at 4:00 p.m., Black Friday, Barbara Jean Weingart will speak about the techniques of painting and dyeing silk and other natural fabrics. Ms. Weingart is an award-winning textile artist who offers her work in shows and galleries throughout the country.
Barbara holds a Master’s degree in design from Syracuse University and has studied under John Marshall and Betsy Sterling Benjamin, internationally recognized masters of Japanese techniques. An experienced designer, she has taught at Syracuse University. She maintains studios in both Syracuse and in the Adirondacks, where she holds workshops in her techniques. Many of her designs are inspired by the natural environment. She often uses several techniques on her complex individual pieces
SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
On November 28 at 4:00 p.m. and 6 p.m., Small Business Saturday, Vanessa Johnson, a Griot, a storyteller in the West African tradition will perform at Armory Artworks. Listen as the artwork comes to life through story. Dedicated to the memory of Thea St. Omar artist/filmmaker.
Vanessa Johnson is a native to Syracuse, a fiber artist, a performer, a playwright and a writer. She travels between Syracuse and Ghana frequently. Her talent and creativity is broadly based and far reaching, always bringing voice and visibility to events and those who have been unseen or unheard, often with poignancy and laughter. As a social activist and teacher, her work has included venues such as the YMCA Writer’s Center, the Onondaga Historical Association, the Matilda Joslyn Gage foundation, the Syracuse City School District, the Red House, the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company of Syracuse, her band Matie Masie, and the Syracuse Africa Bound International Program, which she founded.
